A sanctuary is known to be a place where we can escape from the world. A haven that brings a sense of peace and positivity. And even though we can’t travel to the coast or to the hills or book into fancy-pants retreats at the moment, it doesn’t mean we can’t create sanctuaries for ourselves – DIY-style.
When there is so much fear and uncertainty, it is more important than ever that we are proactive in creating small moments of refuge away from the turmoil. By structuring these times in our day, we protect ourselves from getting completely absorbed in negativity and despair. By doing this we can positively influence our life, so we are more relaxed, focused and purposeful.
Your Morning Sanctuary
Stillness
Before you check your phone and get caught up in the busyness of your day, start your morning with stillness so that your nervous system works for you, rather than against you.
Some examples that I recommend are:
- 10 belly-breathes before getting out of bed.
- Listening to a mindfulness app.
- Sitting in the fresh air for 5mins and noticing all the different sounds of nature.
- Standing in the shower whilst feeling the water on your body and focusing on who you want to be in this world. Who do you want to show up as today?
Movement
By moving your body first thing you get your blood flowing, you fire up your metabolism and you improve your cognitive ability.
Some examples that I recommend are:
- A gentle yoga workout in your lounge-room.
- Walking the dog around the block.
- Circuit training at home with body weight exercises.
- Power walking or jogging or stair repeats.
Nourishment
Give your brain and body the best kick-start by hydrating it with water and nourishing it with wholefoods that have come from nature not a packet.
Some examples that I recommend are:
- Warm water and lemon juice
- Green smoothie
- Fruit, seeds, nuts, natural yoghurt
- Wholegrain breads and cereals
